A four-day course spread out over a month for writers with some experience, to work on a full-length novel or a piece of long fiction.


At the heart of the four days is the experience and knowledge of two established and successful authors, Paul Burston and VG Lee.
The course will be held in their homes to ensure a relaxed yet creative atmosphere.


The first course will be held in Hastings during April 2017.
The second course will be in Oval, London during May 2017.


Who is the course aimed at?
We are looking for authors who have been writing fiction for some years and are either already working on a novel or feel they would now like to try their hand at starting one.

Please send a maximum of 1000 words sample of your work with a covering email telling us of your writing experience and what you would like to get out of the course.

What we offer
Each week we will discuss the essentials of writing a novel including research, craft, plot, opening pages and characterization. The course will be tailored to answer your questions, to help you write the novel you want to write!

Week 1: Developing your ideas and plot
Week 2: Characterization and dialogue
Week 3: The writing process and personal style
Week 4: Re-drafting and editing.

For both courses, there will be a minimum of 4 writers, maximum of 8.

Paul Burston is the critically-acclaimed author of five novels and the editor of two short story collections. His latest novel 'The Black Path', was longlisted for the Guardian's Not The Booker Prize 2016 and was a bestseller at WH Smith.

'Shameless', Burston's first novel was shortlisted for a State of Britain Award and his third, 'Lovers & Losers' for a Stonewall Award. In a writing career spanning twenty-five years, he has also published four non-fiction books, including an essay collection, a pop biography and a book of travel writing, as well as countless newspaper and magazine articles for publications including The Guardian, The Independent, Time Out and The Sunday Times. He is also familiar with all levels of editing, from commissioning and working with writers to subbing and proof reading.

As an experienced workshop facilitator, he has devised and run masterclasses on performance and promotional skills and overcoming writers' block for The Guardian, as well as tutoring creative writing workshops for Queer UP North and as part of Polari, the literary salon he founded in 2007, based at London's Southbank Centre. The Polari Salon has proved so popular, funded by Arts Council England it now tours annually throughout Britain.

He has worked closely with fellow authors as part of a writing group, offering constructive criticism, problem solving, brain storming and developing ideas in a safe, supportive environment.

VG Lee is the prize-winning author of five novels and a collection of short stories. Her most recent novel, 'Mr Oliver's Object of Desire' was published in 2016 by Ward Wood Publishing.

In 2012, her novel 'Always you, Edina' was chosen as Stonewall's Book of the Month and in the same year Lee was also nominated for a Stonewall Award for writing. In 2013, she was short-listed for Ultimate Planet's LBQ Comedian of the Year and Best Established author, finally winning the award for Best Established Author in 2014.

Her short stories have appeared in numerous anthologies including Paradise Press's 'A Boxful of Ideas', Diva Books' erotic anthology VaVaVoom and the ground-breaking LGBT anthologies 'Girls & Boys', 'Men & Women' from Limehouse Books.

In the past, Lee has also been a joint winner of the Writer of the Year Competition by Writers Inc and shortlisted for The Geoffrey Dearmer Award for poetry. Her poems have appeared in Poetry Review, Magma, Poetry London and Anvil Press's Beyond Bedlam.

She is a stand-up comedian and regular contributor of humour to The Lady Magazine

Over the last two decades VG Lee has tutored creative writing & performance skills workshops and courses in London and the south-east as well as for two Polari National Tours.
